First thing first, I am writing this post from Wiesbaden! woohoo…! well I was just arrived this afternoon around 15.30, and directly walk into Moritzstraße, the place where I stay. Tomorrow, I will attend conference called see-conference #6. I am super excited to see this conference…!
This conference is somehow not related with my thesis writing that talk actually talked about:
- Theory development in IS — confirmatory, exploratory phase, et cetera. 
- TETRAD project from Spirtes, Glymour and Scheines 
- …and other research examples from the thesis draft that I presented so far (Bessler and Loper 2001 on GDP Growth related with economic findings, Mazanec 2007 on tourism)
My thesis was rambling about the new approach proposed by Lee, and other research paper that refer to the work of TETRAD by Spirtes et al. It is surely convincing that in Information System area, the need to explore the theory in IS field is still not mature, and it is explicitly told by Lee that:
”The lack of theories and methodological weaknesses have been pointed out as two distinct but related problems in empirical Management Information Systems (MIS) research.“
Further, the approach that is now being used by many IS researchers is too confident, while almost of the theory being build (i.e: Technology Acceptance Model-TAM, etc.) directly formed in confirmatory level, leaving the important previous level that should be done before; called exploratory level.
In here TETRAD approach was important. Now Im still writing those formula from the algorithm–DAG, vanishing tetrad, Markov Condition and Faithfullness etc. These TETRAD approach are already proven that TETRAD is a strong tool to uncover hidden relationship between data, even when there is no prior knowledge being given. The input needed can be presented in categorical data (ex: from Bessler & Loper in using World Bank data presented about countries’s GDP, Government Spending, Export resources, etc.) and then will be formulated into correlation matrix, to be the main input for TETRAD. And now, I would like to give the proof in another data which is in Knowledge Sharing areas (Ma & Yuen 2011) and the result will stated that TETRAD is somewhat improving the research.
In my TETRAD result, it is noted there are differences from the original theory. The result gained from TETRAD said that all constructs build the framework of Ma & Yuen is related but not give any causal direction on one another, at all. In fact, in their paper, Ma & Yuen also noted that one hypothesis they made, is not supported, which was able being shown already by TETRAD, without making any prior knowledge (using only correlation matrix from the same data for the research work).
This kind of research phase is somewhat neglected by many researchers, with the condition that having too much belief his/her work is already good enough, without making any exploration on the theory (obviously, called the exploratory phase) — According to Lee, the aim are — to increase the flexibility and somewhat have richer models — to search the true endogenous and exogenous variables on the framework (by testing the correlation matrix at item level in TETRAD Algorithm called PURIFY) — and finally to build some causality on the framework based on the pure models given by TETRAD model (from PURIFY, then become an input for Algorithm in MIMBuild).
Well that was the basic idea of the master thesis. I hope that I can write those piece of thoughts well structured and not just rambling here and there (like I did right now).
AND NOW–what is the correlation with this Data Visualization thingy..?
To be honest, I love art. I do love when this boring things I did (data, theory) will be presented in a beautiful clever ways.. I am not an advance in design. NOT AT ALL. But I love them and curious how these guys make such an amazing works for their projects.. and this is can be my knowledge for my other fairytale–called PhD level of study… I humbly call it fairytale because it is not happen yet.. but there is the dream about it. My curiosity in this area is increasing lately, and this see-conference become one of my interest.
I hope that I could gain a lot of knowledge tomorrow. Last but not least, fijne weekend en tot morgen Lutherkirchen!
